The Led Zep of the 90's wears a skirt. by Andrew T. Kim Tokyo
Reviewed on January 14th, 2004
Of course, I heard "What's Up". Who hasn't? It is one of those songs that is instantly likeable and impossible to forget. However, I must admit that I did not know of any other songs by 4 Non Blondes. In fact, I did not even know the name of the Band, until very recently I had this urge to listen to "What's Up" again and started digging for the CD that had the song. I basically bought the CD just for that song. And what a find it was. I am a big fan of good vocals. Now I knew from What's Up that Linda Perry (again, didn't even know the name till lately) had a great voice, but I was not at all prepared for this. From the first song, Ms Perry's voice explodes out of the speakers, and fill the expanses of the room which seems to vibrate from its sheer energy. Influence of Blues is evident throughout the CD and the style has more in common with blues-streaked big bands of 70's rather than so-called "female singer-songwriters" of late. Ms Perry's voice and style is more Janis Joplin (or even Robert Plant) than Alainis. Because of the intensity of Ms Perry's voice, this CD is not something I could listen to over and over again.(with the exception of What's Up). But when I do play this CD, it always makes me stop whatever I was doing and feel the sonic explosion of her voice. I know that Ms Perry is still in the Music business working with the likes of Pink and Aguilera. While that's all good and fine, I still wish that she will decide to pick up the mike again, not just her guitar.
