702? In a losing battle againest new-school R&B groups

Can old-school R&B groups like 702 compete with new-school ones like 3LW and now Destiny's Child? I think they can but this album isn't a prime example of it. 702 uses a classic formula in the modern days to give you a rush of groups like En Vogue but with more attitude. And for the first part of the album, it works. Songs like the thunder of "Where My Girls At?" and the techno R&B vibe to "You Don't Know" show they mean business. But then the cliches start up, singing about bubblegum love and lame "miss you" ballads that could refill the Pacific Ocean with the tears. You can tell Missy Elliot only produced two songs on the album. It's important you know the good and the bad on the album so here is a review of the songs:1. 7 (Interlude) Not much to say, I usually start the CD off on track 2. 2. Where My Girls At? - An instant ladies anthem and an instant guy's guilty pleasure. Don't mess with them or you will get burned. 10/10 3. You Don't Know - Even though this isn't a Missy track, it elevates itself over most others. Only question, what happened to this video? Weird... 10/10 4. Make Time - A nice groove that has enough turns to keep you interested. 8/10 5. 0 (Interlude) - A short ditty. 6. You Just Never Know - I'm really feeling this song. 702 harmonize perfect to make this ballad a keeper. 8.5/10 7. Finally - Here is where the mediocre starts. It's got the elements, but they don't mix well. 6/10 8. Tell Your Girl - Poorly made song, leaves you very unsatisfied. The worst song on the CD. 3/10 9. Gotta Leave - Good chorus but the song is too sluggish to leave much of an impact. 5/10 10. Don't Go Breaking My Heart - An okay track but an obvious filler. Vocal are top-notch though. 7/10 11. 2 (Interlude) - Meelah's song 12. What More Can I Do - Beat is okay but the song is too airy. Skippable. 5/10 13. Seven - Interesting at first but you'll notice it's too rough around the edges. 6.5/10 14. Will you Be OK? - Doesn't end on an extremely strong note. It is good enough to boost out of the slump. 7.5/10 Even though I didn't enjoy this album as much as I had hoped, it still is a nice listen. If CDs like Destiny's Child's THE WRITINGS ON THE WALL, DESTINY'S CHILD, or Divine's FAIRY TALES are some of your favorites, I recommend this album. From what I know, a new album is on the way. So 702? A little more will push them into super-stardom, but until then, keep "Where My Girls At?" on your list of mp3s.
