I bought this album initially back in '97, just for the song "Get It Together", because I loved the song and the video was on point. I recently dusted this album off and realized that this album is truly an R&B gem.
702 really brings it hard with this album, something unheard of from such young girls. Usually, girls their age put out teeny-bopper music that you get sick of hearing after one or two listens, but 702 brought it. Check out the song "Steelo". It's tight, not too Nickelodeonesque, with just enough adult flavor to keep your head moving. Plus, we get a lovely cameo from Missy Elliott, who really was coming into her own back then. Another standout is the song "Not Gonna", with a serious diva attitude all up in it! The song is just so tight and is reminiscent of the 90s New Jack swing era.
The slower songs fare well as well. "Get Down Like Dat" is my song! That song is tight, using a sample from Barry White's "Strange Games and Things" (which was also used by Destiny's Child in their hit "No No No Part II"). Kameelah throws down in the vocal department here and lets you know that she ain't one to be messed with! Also, "Get It Together" is a treasure within itself, with its strong delivery and tight harmonies. Also worth mentioning is the song "Word Iz Bond", which has that laid-back feel to it, thumping along effervescently.
The only problem that I had with this album isn't even all that much of a problem. I wanted to hear some of Irish's and LeMisha's vocals on leads. Don't get me wrong, Kameelah can blow, but I would have liked to hear some more of the other two girls. LeMisha was too tight on "Word Iz Bond" and I wanted to hear more!
These girls knew that they were doing it with this one, and this album got them numerous awards and a memorable performance at the 1997 Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards. This is the stuff that girl groups are made of!!
