I have all of Tool and APC's albums, so I have a basis for stating Emotive is excellent and lives up to the high standards of Maynard's previous work. Yes, it's mostly covers, but they're not just regurgitated copies of the originals. Musically they're unique to the point of, in some cases, being almost unrecognizable. An example is People are People. The lyrics are the same but the music is vastly different. Also, I'm tired of hearing people complain it's "not like Maynard's other work". All his albums are different, but you can still recognize his signature here. The high point of Emotive is Peace, Love, and Understanding. If the rest of it were crap this one song would be worth the price. I bought it for Imagine, which I'd heard on the radio, but this surpasses it. The only songs I'm so-so about are Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie and Freedom of Choice. Counting Bodies Like Sheep is a remix of Pet from Thirteenth Step and different. The rhythmic drums give the impression of vast armies of jackbooted thugs. Passive isn't a cover. It was written in collaboration with Trent Reznor and Danny Lohner of NIN. Fiddle and the Drum is a cappella and a fitting last song and emotionally charged. I suspect that "some" may not like this, or deliberately give it low ratings, due to the political nature of it's message.
