Anyone writing "I'm SUCH a huge APC fan usually but..." needs to stop writing now. If you can't see the beauty and genius in this album then you're obviously not a fan, especially seeing as how the definition of fan includes "an ardent devotee; an enthusiast." Fanatics like myself love everything their artist puts out, even if a few songs are questionable, and at least appreciate to death all the time and effort and reworking and production that revolves around putting a masterpiece like this out by election day. Maynard cares about the state of our country, do you?
Things I love that everyone else hates: *I love Billy's singing. I wasn't sure I would, but I truly do.
*I think their cover of Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie is fantastically worked. Who says Black Flag can't be played slow??
*I like People Are People, I think it's a really good song. But I've always hated Depeche Mode, so anytime one of their songs is redone (a la Tori) I end up loving it. Same with Beatles songs for some reason...
* I LOVE the new version of Pet. It's so gritty and industrial it makes me wonder why they didn't make this version originally. It sounds a lot like a NIN song, which is solid. It makes me want to get down (if you catch my drift). Whoever is screaming in the background of that song rules (I think it's Critter).
*AAAAAhhhh, three a capella Maynards on the last song. I can die happy now.
Also, on the issue of relativity, I think this album is totally relevant to the times, focusing on the ideas of war and big gov't and all that. This album is going to be a bright beacon in a cloudy and uncertain next four years, I can tell you that right now.
So yeah... stop the Maynard bashing dammit. It's pissing me off, especially since it's so undeserved. People are calling it slow and stupid, a letdown, a waste of money, unlistenable, a disappointment... whatever. These people must be listening to a wholly different album than me.
