As a big fan of Tool, I was eagerly anticipating this release as soon as I found out that is was coming out a few years ago. I had purchased the albums, 'Aenima' and 'Undertow' by Tool. I had also picked up 'Lateralus' the day that it was released. As I said, I was excited to hear about a group that Maynard James Keenen would also handle the lead vocals.
As soon as I put the album into the cd player, I had mixed emotions. I know this music isn't supposed to be Tool, but I had gotten so used to the dark, beautiful and heavy music that Maynard and his unusually different bandmates created. Don't get me wrong, Maynard's vocals sound really good on this release, but the only songs that stood out to me were, Judith, The Hollow, and the beautiful track, Orestas. The songwriting here is good, but the songs are a lot shorter than what I was used to with Tool. This is a decent cd compared to most of the lame music that is mainstream today, which is why I listen to so much metal from Europe. I recommend Tool's cds in addition to Mer de Noms. The new album, Thirteenth Step is better than this one, in my opinion. Tool will always be a great band, and Maynard has one of the best voices in this genre.
