Surprisingly Fresh and Different by Brittany Leschasin Winnipeg, MB
Reviewed on August 9th, 2002
I first heard of A.P. from the Van Wilder soundtrack with the stunning song "Start Over"....I put that on a cd awhile back and then I just decided to check out the bands other tracks on their album. Wow is all I can say...Abandoned Pools has a very unique vocal sound which definately sets them apart, since the leader singer has an emocore type voice, but also uses female backup vocals and tries out different genres. Aside from that the songs dabble with different instruments and styles varying from piano-driven ballads, to british-sounding rock-pop, to hard rock. Here is a breakdown for y'all!1. The Remedy - AP's first single I believe, its very laid-back and not really mellow but sorta shady sounding. The guitar is really nice, and the chorus is very simple and catchy. 2. Mercy Kiss - Their 2nd single happens to be their 2nd song...a mix of harder rock and a very upbeat drum-driven song that is great for a road trip. It resembles more of a popular mainstream sound then "The Remedy". 3. Start Over - My original favorite of course this song has really nice lyrics and is very piano driven with some great backup vocals. Its a really sweet ballad-type song, excellent! 4. Monster - Another darker track here with almost distorted-sounding verses and a very dark, violin, grandstand chorus with lots of rock...reminds me of something from a climax of a movie. 5. Blood - Yet another deeper sounding song but the chorus is a lot lighter vocally...the lyrics are a bit weird in this one, listen closely! It reminds me a bit too much of "Monster"... 6. Suburban Muse - Definately one of my faves it reminds me of British sounding rock like Oasis, Pulp etc. Its got a real light romantic cute sound to it. Drum-driven here. 7. Sunny Day - They go light here again...well sorta. This song is more mocking of the previous song then seriously happy. Its got a real head-bobbing type of background vocals during the chorus, I'm not a big fan of the fact its mainly drum-driven but the vocals make up. 8. L.V.B.D. - This whole song is driven by guitar riffs that are rather repitive. The group goes from sweetness to rockerness here... I just wanna know waht LVBD means! 9. Ruin Your Life - A very sudden change again this song reminds me a bit of "Suburban Muse" and I think it woulda been good as the last track...Considering the title its quite happy and the vocals almost remind me of the Beatles. 10. Never - The acoustic tribute on the cd this track is screaming to be on Dawsons Creek or something. Its another style-change that the lead singer dabbles with. Its unique compared to the other tracks. 11. Seed - Possibly the most rockin' track on the cd its another guitar-riff driven type song. Not my fave or anything but its a great contrast to "Never" and brings another stylistic tone to the album. 12. Fluorescein - I think this is a good ending to the cd for one main reason...the lyrics aren't particularly amazing I guess but the song is the only one that REALLY takes the two things Abandoned Pools is best at and combines them sucessfully. THose two things of course are rocking riffs and vocals, and a softer unique sound during the verses...interesting mix.
