Another level of music by P-Town Cracker Portland, OR
Reviewed on December 6th, 2003
I first heard Acid Bath about 5 years ago and was instantly amazed. This is easily THE most underrated band of the 1990's. This past New Orleans band produced a sound that is impossible to label: heavy, beautiful, haunting, evil, harmonious, and thought provoking. Dax Riggs is a modern day genius, writing dark poetic lyrics that will haunt your thoughts for days afterward. And his voice.....beyond description. It will send chills down your spine. The guitar work is solid, with Sammy crunching out some heavy riffs and providing the frantic demonic screams scattered throughout the album. This release is definitely not for the squeamish or religious minded. "Old Skin" and the final track are very disturbing satanic chants. Brilliant poetry, no matter how you look at it. All in all, this band, in my opinion, is a legend. Little known, but deserving to go down in music history. If you have not heard them, GO OUT AND BUY THIS ALBUM. And "When the Kite String Pops", their ingenious debut. It's a shame this band is no longer together. Their bassist, Audie Petrie, (a very talented man) was killed in a car accident along with most of his family because of some dumb f*cking drunk. He left behind a pregnant wife and several distraught fans. He will be missed. Also, I reccomend looking for the Acid Bath DVD, "Double Live Bootleg". It contains several excellent live performances and a video. Dax Riggs and Mike Sanchez can be heard in "Agents of Oblivion". While it leaves behind the evilness and brutality of Acid Bath, it still features beautiful harmonies and Dax's other-worldly voice. Definitely worth checking out. And if you still want evil, Sammy Duet now heads up "Goatwhore", billed as the first true American black metal band. Not my style, but black metal listeners would do well to look into them.
