The G00d Time$ by @ @ $ CA , USA

Afroman, a.k.a. Joseph Foreman, may be the biggest thing to come out of Hattiesburg, Miss., since ... well ...ever. His goofy, rueful single "Because I Got High" struck a chord with stoners from all walks of life to become a much-requested favorite of shock jocks from coast to coast. It's definitely this summer's answer to "Who Let the Dogs Out" -- but don't expect to hear this controversial novelty song at a Mets game anytime soon. Now Foreman follows up on the success of "Because" with his full-length debut, The Good Times. Those expecting more of the same won't be disappointed, as the album is full of cheerfully raunchy jokes about smoking weed, drinking 40s, and, err ... oral pleasure. Such songs as "Tall Cans," "Crazy Rap," "Let's All Get Drunk," and "She Won't Let Me F**k" will all go a long way toward satisfying Afroman's frat-boy fan base, but only scratch the surface of this complex MC's worldview. No doubt that Afroman can be as crude as Luke Skyywalker or Sir Mix-A-Lot at their most sophomoric, but on such tracks as "Palmdale," "Mississippi," and "The American Dream" he takes humorous -- and pointed -- swipes at gang violence, police brutality, and racism. Of course he isn't breaking any new ground, but Afroman's deep-fried Southern perspective and winning wit (not to mention his signature chicken samples) bring something fresh to these tired tropes. Though he's not a particularly gifted MC, Afroman manages to bring an essential silliness back to hip-hop, harkening back to the pop-rap of Tone-Loc, Young MC, and a young Will Smith (a sweet contrast to the usual guns-and-golds thuggin' of most crews from the Dirty South). It's OK to laugh at The Good Times, but recognize that, if you laugh at Afroman, the joke just might be on you.
