A Real Body Blow If You Don't Check It ! by R/S/K/D Essex, UK
Reviewed on November 29th, 2000
Part of the Gang Starr foundation and a rhyme-trader with Jeru The Damaja not so long ago - yet not a name you could easily put a face to. This reviewer in particular was forced to administer a serious case of ignoramusness when this long-time coming debut landed in his lap, although judging by the snazzy Tekken-style graphics and the boasting of one DJ Premier as executive producer - not to mention a hidden agenda that stretches back to Jeru's The Sun Rises In The East in 1994 - the faceless Afu's plucking from seeming obscurity may not have been as big a gamble as the average follower would think. With Premo on one side and established guests flanking the other, Afu is certainly no mug. This is a package so polished you can see your face in it, mental power is the new gun-slinging and the flow is as free as the spirit with which Ra arms himself with. The martial art influence is obvious, what with the man being a devotee to tae kwon do, but its more a case of clever unforeseen leg-sweeps rather than shrieking elbow drops - Premo is Mr Mayagi to Ra's Karate Kid, the master teaching the pupil, the pair harmoniously peaking through psychological tactics dominating physical intimidation. It may offer you out for a severe beating, but in true fighters etiquette, you can't help but show respect for the talent on show. So from going from complete obscurity (well, in this reviewers eyes anyway), Afu Ra wades in with an accomplished collection of karate choppers - think Wu-Tang but slightly less blatant, think Premo in tremendous form, and think back to the last time you listened to a less obvious rap artist making an impact that has `Hundred Hand Slap' written all over it. Afu-Ra is certainly the people's champion with this one...
