machines give me some freedom

I had high hopes for this album. Air's first full-length album, Moon Safari, produced some of the sweetest electronic sounds of the year, along with some really great singing and space-y loungescapes, not to mention that the album has a sexy French tint to it. They followed that up with what I thought was a really amazing dark score for the movie The Virgin Suicides. The Moog strings, synthed singers, traditional rock instruments and general ambient sounds manipulated the air around it to make the silence seem defeaning compared to the dark sounds. 10,000 Hz Legend is a disappointment.Without a doubt, Air is trying to reinvent themselves again. First they were the sexy French spacelounge band, then the composers coloring the silence with minor chords, and now it looks like they want to be robots. The first song features a obviously programmed beat, bleeps, and one of the guy singing through a lowered vocoded voice things like "We are the synchronizers" and "They drive me through 12-beat samplers." Maybe they thought the song would be kinda funky. I just think it's kinda scary. "How Does This Make You Feel?" features the old Macintalk voice giving some kind of whispered speech about love while the guys lazily pluck at guitars and play bass on the keyboard. And it goes on far too long which is one of the major things wrong with this record. The songs just go on so long and you lose whatever interest you might have had in the beginning. One of the only songs that kept me interested the whole time was "Radio #1," one of the few songs where they're actually sounding like humans and are putting some effort into playing. The music sounds like "Electronic Performers," but at least this time the singing is really catchy. Beck plays a harmonica and sings on "The Vagabond," a song that could've been on Mutations it had a more interesting production. Here it's kind of dragged down by the sparse "deep reaches of outer space" sound. "Radian's" terrible drone and "Ooooooooh" singing intro gives way to a pleasant flute, guitar and harp section that lets the song end on a good note. There's almost nothing good to say about "Lucky & Unhappy" or "People In The City." They're boring and go on too long. "Don't Be Light" is the only other song I really like because it reminds me of the score to some old sci-fi kids movie I saw a long time ago and reminds me of some of the music from the old video games I used to play on my computer, too. But, please, let's drop the shred guitar?
