This auburn-haired southerner pulls no vocal punches on this impressive debut, showing her true colors as a versatile, wide-ranging vocalist capable of astonishing performances. Moorer's finest moments here are the uptempo "Long Black Train" and the grammy-nominated "Softer Place To Fall," a gorgeous ballad from the motion picture 'The Horse Whisperer' co-written with Gwil Owen. Moorer's versatility is a double-edged sword, however. She is probably capable of singing anything, but without picking a direction, (country or rock, she could do either) she is unlikely to get airplay on radio. One certain way to get attention is to be a successful singer/writer (like one-time writing partner Bruce Robison) but Moorer's singing is miles ahead of her writing. Until the two converge, her career may prove to be frustrating.
