Man, can this gal sing country!

I've heard it said that only people who've "suffered" can be poets. I'll take the liberty of extending that observation to include singers, particularly country/western vocalists. If the hypothesis is valid, then much of the happy horse manure I hear on LA's only CW radio station must be sung by artists with an insufficient background in heartache. This cannot be the case with Allison Moorer.ALABAMA SONG is my first exposure to this incredibly talented lady whose throaty voice can croon those I'm-far-from-home-and-broken-hearted-and-dang-your-cheatin'-ways ballads. I haven't enjoyed a CW album so much since the soundtrack to COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER, the brilliant 1980 film bio of Loretta Lynn starring Sissy Spacek (who won an Oscar for this role, and did her own singing to boot). The title track, "Alabama Song", captures the yearning anyone might feel to be with a loved one. "If you're going to Alabama, I could use a change of view. But if you're going to California, that's alright, anyplace will do. Well, I guess I just wanna go with you." Any state could substitute for Alabama or California in the lyrics - well, maybe not New York - and the emotion would be conveyed just as strongly. The best song on the CD is "A Soft Place to Fall", a sad remembrance of love lost. "I was looking for a soft place to fall. Looking for a soft place, nothing more than a small taste, of a love that ended long ago." Shoot, now where did I put that box of Kleenex? This is the sort of album best listened to alone on an auto trip through those wide, lonely expanses of the West, at night and far from home. No track is less than a 7 on a scale of 10. I can't wait to purchase Allison's newest release, THE HARDEST PART.
