Pwetty good

Amanda Ghost's "Ghost Stories" contains a wide variety of songs, to say the least. We start out with a club-thumpy "Filthy Mind", which, while not awfully cutting-edge from an electronica point of view, is nonetheless a catchy track.Then we get into the folk-pop ballad "Glory Girl", which sounds tailor-made for a primetime soap opera such as "Gilmore Girls" or "Dawson's Creek." Who knows, maybe it's already been used on a TV show. Really, the whole CD veers all over the musical map, featuring influences as diverse as trip-hop, house, folk, rock, etc. Plenty of talent is in evidence here. The girl can write music and sing for sure. Why 3 stars? Her voice. Not the tone, no - she has a pleasant, soulful, emotive voice. A voice that conveys true feeling and meaning to her words. But it is also a voice that has a bit of a speech impediment. "R" becomes "W", and it thoroughly distracted me from the message of the music. I started waiting in hushed anticipation to hear another hilarious example of this impediment. Look, I'm sorry, I shouldn't be picking on this, but it really ruined several of the songs for me. The song "Glory Girl" became "Glowy Guhl". Lyrics such as "freedom" became "fweedom", "grapevine" is now "gwapevine", and when she started singing about being wrapped in "cewwophane" in the song "Cellophane", well, I burst out laughing. Just in case I was imagining things, I let a few friends listen to the tracks, and they laughed even harder than I. If you can look past this flaw, if it doesn't leap out at you like it does with me, you'll find a fine disc filled with creative music. If you can't look past it, however, then don't bother purchasing the CD.
