With this debut album going 10 times platinum in Canada, Amanda Marshall stepped into the forefront of Canadian music. This is a solid first effort. In fact, the album was so successful, 7 of the 10 songs were released as singles and were all hits. This however spelled ultimate disaster, the same that befelled Alannah Myles - a huge first album, then a quick fade from the spotlight. Like Myles, Marshall had a very strong sophomore album but it was declared a disappointment because it didn't match the sales of the first one. Because of that negativity, Myles struggled thereafter to find that winning touch and never did. Proof that Marshall will buck this trend arrived with her third album and further success will cement her career as a solid artist. Though this CD lacks the maturity and depth of her two other releases, there is no denying Marshall's talent - an unbelievable voice that is put to good use on heartfelt songs and wild rockers. "Let It Rain" is a super lead off, though the biggest US hit "Birmingham" falls flat with the soprano saxophone. The same can be said for "Fall From Grace" - it sounds flat and impish. Marshall rescues these two songs however with superb vocals. The hits continue with the massive Canadian hit "Dark Horse" - great groove, music and lyrics. Marshall's amp-style vocals on "Beautiful Goodbye" and "Sitting On Top Of The World" are incredible. The final single "Trust Me Baby (This Is Love)" is a disappointment, mainly because the version Anne Murray did on her critically acclaimed self-titled 1996 album is so superior to this one. This is a great introduction to Amanda Marshall. Her talent will continue to grow, as it has from this important starting point.
