Being a canadian female singer/songwriter, and releasing her debut a year after Alanis, was never going to be an easy task. But, it one that Amanda Marshall triumphs in. Blessed wit a voice of range, and power, she manages to convey the emotion in every song. The record kicks of with a trio of wonderful songs, Let it rain is just brilliant, but Birmingham and the third track, Fall from Grace are simply wonderful. Birmingham takes a subject as hard as an abusive relationship, and manages to turn it into a positive experiance, and at the same time be as expressive as a novel of thousands of words. "Virgil Spencers'got a 19 inch Hitachi, with many demons lingering. Last night he pulled a gun to change the channel, something that picked up from the king", and "It's three a.m.and Virgil's passed out on the sofa, a fifth of Jim Beam on the floor. She's packed her bags, sshe slips the keys out of his packet, and she's careful not to slam the door" But it's the line, just before the middle eight"As the rain beats down upon the interstate, all the doubts she has have all been washed away". Sorry, but as you can see, I love that song. The rest of the album has gems, none better than Fall from Grace. Sitting on top of the World will be familiar to fans of "new country" And the record climaxes with a huge power ballard, "Promises". Do yourself a favour, and grab this while you can, you wont regret it.
