What a voice... by "cycworker" Nanaimo, B.C. Canada

Amanda Marshall is one of my favorite solo artists. As soon as this CD came out, I went out and bought it, which I never do. I usually wait until it's been out a while and can hear enough word of mouth or singles to decide if I want it. But Marshall is different. She has such an amazing voice, and her music is so passionate, heartfelt, and intense, and her first album was so terrific, that I knew this one would be as well. Even better, she writers or cowrites some of her songs. And the lyrics for all are amazing. The scary thing is that this album is actually even better than the first. There's a wonderful range of songs about universal themes; love, loss, regret. The music is gorgeous, and there's a wide range, from uptempo to slow and soothing, so the listener never gets bored. Even better, Marshall knows how to mix it up in a way that doesn't make the album seem disjointed. Everything flows nicely. A couple numbers are a tad over the top (I'm thinkig specifically of If I Didn't Have You), but it somehow works. I would love to be able to say what the best tracks are on this CD, but they're all so good that it's hard to pick. Certainly Believe In Me is a beautiful song. I also especially love Too Little Too Late, Best of Me, and Shades of Grey (which is absolutely haunting). It's hard to classify Marshall's music. It's somewhere between pop/rock and Adult Contemporary. I see her as essentially a cross between a Sarah McLachlan or a Jann Arden (she's actually a little more up tempo than these two) and Melissa Etheridge with a few less guitars. It's music that is more for listening than dancing, overall. This CD is one I think should be in any serious music fan's collection. I know it's one of my top 10 all time favorites.
