Amanda Marshall's second album, though slightly eclipsed by her brilliant debut, is an outstanding effort. Most of pop music today is trite, homogenized, and generated simply to promote the artist's pre-fabricated image or sell McDonald's Happy Meals. With Marshall you get soulful lyrics, beautiful but not overproduced arrangements, and an unforgettable sound from an uncompromising, idiosyncratically Canadian talent who never panders to the masses and thus will probably never receive mass acceptance in the United States. But who really cares? As long as she continues to release works of this magnitude, those of us in the know will just buy the CDs and rejoice!
