I gave this album 3.5 stars cause I don't really know how to judge this album. The very things which make it great are also it's greatest flaws. Andrew W.K. possesses a frenetic energy and positivity and lust for life that I really haven't seen in a singer since the great David Lee Roth fronted Van Halen in it's heyday. Andrew has taken everything that's great about rock and heavy metal and disco and new wave and punk and hip hop and combined it into one explosive package...and then made it even BIGGER and MORE grandiose than anyone before him has imagined it to be. Seriously, take a look at this album and try and compare it to anything that's come before it. There really isn't anything like it, anywhere. Andrew takes all the things that are infectious and catchy in popular music, that the hip later deride, and upped the cheesiness factor. The choruses and harmonies are all huge, the beats are big and bouncy and danceable, the guitars are loud and fast, the tempo is always on maximum, the themes are all about partying and love and enjoying life and partying and living to the full and sex and partying. This album comes upon all boundaries and shatters through them like a group of raging, steroid-pumped, testosterone-driven defensive linemen. The mess it lives in its wake is like a beautiful sculpture made from all the disposable waste and garbage that is 'pop' culture. Every song is an affirmation of life 'I Love NYC', 'Party Hard', 'She Is Beautiful', 'It's Time To Party', 'Fun Night', 'Girls Own Love' etc. I can see jocks loving this stuff, cause its really hard not to get pumped up to this album. The relentess rhythms make this a perfect car cd for when you're rushing off somewhere. Put it on when you go out for a jog and I defy you to not keep pace in time with the beat. W.K. takes the cheesiest synthesizer sounds, the disco-iest of disco beats, the heaviest guitar riffs, the loudest and catchiest choruses and somehow makes it work! What bogs the album down, though, is it's sameness. It's hard to listen to the album all the way through because it kinda just doesn't let up. At all! Sometimes it just wears you out. There's no point in intellectualizing the album really, or even criticizing it...it is what it is and it kinda doesn't care what you think. I don't know how to describe it, really. It's unapolegetic in its earnestness and its passion. Andrew W.K. has put out this little piece of perfection and I must say I dig his stuff. Not every song is great, but the ones that rock, REALLY ROCK!!!
