most triumphant!

Although I had enjoyed 'I Get Wet' very much, I wasn't rushing out to buy this album. Was it going to be more of the same, but watered down? The reviewer on this page, Aidin Vaziri, would have you and I believe so. However, encouraged by some of the more complimentary reviews further down, I went and bought it anyway.The album starts off with the short and mainly instrumental track 'Victory Strikes Again'. This segues neatly into 'Long Live The Party'. It's with this song especially that I take issue with Vaziri's comment that this album displayed little in the way of maturity and progression from the first album. Although the first couple of minutes seem quite standard stuff..it's after that that I started getting surprised. What follows is a majestic and cleverly composed instrumental interlude, the likes of which I've rarely heard since Metallica's 'Master Of Puppets'. It's at this point though that opinion seems to split on the album..with both those that fervently expected continuation of the 'I Get Wet' approach and those that find AWK offensive anyway (the 80s cheese/beer commercial accusers) seeming to balk at this approach. I'm sure that it's their loss..those willing to embrace the music will find themselves immersed in an extremely rewarding and uplifting album. Similarly great and inventive songs are `The Song', `Totally Stupid', `Really In Love' and `I Love Music'..each containing creative use of the AWK thundering keyboard/pianos (a superb `air piano' album!), anthemic choruses, powerful drumming as well as a leaning towards lead guitar work that wasn't as evident on `I Get Wet'. Many of the melodies may not be out of place nestled in a Winger power ballad, but I don't see that as an inherently negative thing..and besides, there're many other influences at work here. At times, if the production were altered a little you'd have something that sounded not dissimilar to death metal! Certainly though, the sum of these influences makes, on this album, for something unique in today's musical environment. Andrew WK is peerless, and I for one am happy that he's around to make this music. He said himself: "No wonder people are tentative about believing in something: First, they're wondering if it's going to let them down, and second, they wonder what people are going to think of them." I urge the reader to overcome these reservations, buy the album, listen, and enjoy!
