You have to give Andrew W.K. credit for having guts. His debut album, I Get Wet, was a huge success -- I consider it one of the greatest hard rock albums of all time. IGW defined a whole new style of loud, fast, aggressive rock and roll mixing punk, metal, synthesizer pop and infectious melodies. With a first album like that, AWK's fans have been predictably nervous about the follow-up album. Certainly, the easiest thing in the world to do would have been to write a bunch of songs in the exact same style as IGW, but Andrew hasn't done that. Instead, The Wolf builds on that foundation (the first few songs will have instant appeal to fans of the previous album), but then, with the song Never Let Down, the album veers off into the territory of (I'm not kidding) power ballads! It sounds ridiculous, but it works. There are several other power ballads on the last half of The Wolf, including The Song and the power-ballad-to-end-all-power-ballads that closes the album, I Love Music. These are not cheesy Whitesnake power ballads, though. Andrew's trademark volume, wall of sound, aggression and melodic hooks are present in abundance. Compared to IGW, the songs are slower (more metal-influenced than punk-influenced), but still satisfying, and I look forward to shouting out the words at the top of my lungs at the next AWK show I go to. In short, The Wolf is very different from I Get Wet but it's still 100% Andrew W. K. and is a worthy successor to his first album. God knows what he'll come up with next.
