4.5 -- Dark & Damp Emotional Landscapes by "ilikeamazon" Arlington, VA USA
Reviewed on August 10th, 2000
If you listen to music for complete emotional engagement ... if you easily tire of the same old styles rehashed and monotony ... if you are looking for music that drifts into your mind like a friendly little space probe exploring all different angles of Life... and if you enjoy listening to that same music over and over again: listen to Bj?rk.Since "Debut", her music has definitely stood in a class completely separate from her work with the Sugarcubes (which I liken to fun and zany party music not unlike the B-52's). So, if you disliked them, please note: her solo work is NOT the same animal. "Homogenic" has a more homogeneous sound than her former albums due to Mark Bell's influence. This less-eclectic sound thread initially makes for a more minimal feel than the fan used to "Debut" and "Post" first expects. This is her first less-hands-in-the-pot, more-Bj?rk influenced album; and, her conscientiousness toward the music is in clear evidence: it's unusual and thick. The sound is darker, mysterious, extremely emotional, cathartic, and achingly beautiful ... with no regrets. This is an album about emotional pain (such as on "5 Years") -- but also healing, as special tracks "All Neon-Like" and "All Is Full of Love" well communicate. Other standouts are "Joga" - a beautiful song about an intimate friendship, and the oft-"Bolero"-compared, prowling "Hunter". The explosive "Pluto" is packed with power. I initiated laughed at it because of all her screaming. However, I was quickly converted and it's now one of my favorites she's ever done! Each time I listen to it, I envision the ecstatic and intensely creating-and-destroying nuclear reactions within a fast-spinning star - or even a supernova. Talk about opening up and exploding off everything that's outworn and stifling and becoming something precious, perfect and new. Mythically-speaking, it's purely Plutonian! And, it's swiftly succeeded by the ambient "All Is Full of Love" = think of color and hyperbolic swirling shapes, spherical shiny sparkles slowly drifting in midair ... Anyone who thinks they need drugs to see these kinds of things needs to sober up and listen to Bj?rk! But to find satisfaction in these songs, you must be willing to take a bite ... will you?
