Ciara is one of the few artists who can just magically appear out of no where and become an instant success. Matter of fact, the only one who can pop into my head who falls in that category is the pop-rock titan: Avril Lavigne. Because let's face it, without having some previous exposure such as Britney, Christina, and Justin with the Mickey Mouse club and two of the three Destiny's Child members (Beyonce and Kelly) starting off at an extremely young age, even being on Star Search, you usually don't make it. However, Ciara is a rare exception and for some good reason.
It is true, she may not have a set of power house vocals such as Beyonce and Christina, but that isn't to say she is denied talent in singing or, most importantly, carrying a beat. "Goodies" blasted onto the summer scene with it's catchy beat made possible Ciara's pretty voice, Petey Pablo's nice rapping skills, and Lil Jon's great production. While the song is great, the second single, "1,2 Step" ft. Missy Elliot was the song that pushed me to buy the album. The song stays strong with it's great beat and the awesome production of Jazze Pha and a nice guest appearance by Missy Elliot.
The album also consists oh great songs such as "Oh" ft. Ludacris, "Hotline", "Thug Style", "And I" (which is the only ballad track), and "Next To You"(which R. Kelly both featured in and produced). But the album strikes gold with my personal favorite, "Lookin' at You", where I feel that the beat borrowed from Maroon 5's "This Love".
The album also contains weak points as well, with mediocre tracks such as "Ooh Baby" (which when I hear it, I hear the "j.Lo" album, and that's not good) and the inappropriate "Goodies [Remix]". Then the album just hits atrocious spots with songs such as "Pick Up The Phone" and "The Title".
The album is a great piece of modern r&b, but at times you can tell she is young with immature lyrics such as "I know you see me on your collar ID/ so pick up the P-H-O-N-E", but the album is almost impossible not to like if all you really wanted out of it was some dance tracks to begin with. Over-all, the album is pretty solid, only slipping every now and then. Over time, I only see things getting better for Ciara.
