From the word go, you can tell that there's a definite thematic narrative to the lyrics on this follow-up album from Dido. More personal, more soul, more autobiographical and sadly, a little bit more cynical than No Angel. To walk through the numbers here, "White Flag" sets off with a racy beat but contains lyrics of a woman brooding what was most likely a melancholy affair. "Stoned" is even racier, and has a chorus that's difficult to dislodge from your memory, you'll be humming it for a while (as I was.) "Life for Rent" is where Armstrong gets a little cynical. Beautiful lyrics, but you shouldn't mind lack of an identifiable rhythm. "Mary's in India," is a slow ballad backed only by guitar strings. Somewhat of a chick-song. "See when you're forty," nice U2-like beats, but not a spectacular tune. Listenable still. "Don't Leave Home," and "Who Makes You Feel" are light, but well-paced numbers. "Sand In My Shoes" gets all Lobo-like, it is to music what chick-lit is to literature. "DO you have a little time," - excellent number! Sounds a bit drugged, like Poe or Garbage's music. In the end, the album leaves a mixed taste. Its best moments suggest that Dido's success is founded on a songwriting talent so undeniable that even people who don't really like music cannot help but be charmed. But it also has moments that remind you of her first album, a couple of songs bear quite close a semblance. Either way, it isn't going to change anyone's mind about Dido. One could argue this isn't spectacularly different, but itâs a well-produced album and gives you a good deal listenable variety, particularly if you like Dido's intelligent non-trivial pop music. Give it a try!
