Dream Theater at their best! by liquid_fist Retropolis
Reviewed on July 31st, 2003
This is a really excellent album by a really excellent band. Not quite as technical as most of their other albums("Awake", "Images & Words", "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence"), but is that really a bad thing? To me, it seems like they stopped trying to impress everyone with their skills and instead created a listening experience halfway between technical progressive rock and more traditional rock n' roll."New Millenium" is an excellent song with a great bass rhythm, signature keyboards that this band is famous for, and the same with the guitars. "You Not Me" is a much more traditional rock song in the sense that the lyrics aren't about anything that could show up on the front page of the newspaper and that the guitars and bass are the most prominent part of the song. "Peruvian Skies" is a cool song with a very laid back, but somehow sinister guitar rhythm. "Hollow Years" should really have been a single(maybe it is and I just don't know about it). I would say it's better than their only single(that I know about) "Another Day". It's a somber song about suicide. "Burning My Soul" is a heavy song. Not that spectacular, but not that bad either. "Hell's Kitchen" isn't very hellish. The name still makes me laugh. This isn't a very powerful or "evil" piece. It's instrumental, and very good, but it sounds way too mellow and nice for the name. "Lines in the Sand" is possibly the album's best song. It's progressive, but not too technical. James LaBrie's vocals are spectacular throughout the entire 12 minutes. It has a great bass groove and a kickass guitar solo. Slow and catchy for most of the middle of it, it ends with a roaring duet by James LaBrie and Doug Pinnick of "King's X". "Take Away My Pain" is a melodic piece with more great vocals by James LaBrie. And again, it has a great guitar solo in it. "Just Let Me Breathe" sounds more like a U2 song when it first starts than anything. But it quickly becomes apparent it's not. This is a lot more technical than the rest of the album and sounds like it could be on "Images and Words" if it wanted to be. "Anna Lee" is a slow piece that has more piano in it than anything. Very melodic. "Trial of Tears" is the epic conclusion to the album. Seperated into three parts, it's pretty good but I think "Lines in the Sand" would have been a better finale piece. Again, there is a lot of groovin' bass in the second part, and I like that. The last part is probably the best. "The Wasteland" is slow and has great vocal harmonies. All in all, this album has a more commercial feel to it. But not so much that they sell out. No, I feel this album is one of their best because they focus more on creating an awesome sound than on creating a complex one. This is easily my first or second favorite Dream Theater album. The only one that can compare is "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory". And even that one gets a run for its money.
