The origin of many concert classics

by
Reviewed on February 7th, 2001

This was the first Mothers of Invention album I ever heard, and it was at the tender age of 10 when my virgin ears heard the comedic commentary of Frank Zappa. Not only did I find the lyrics amusing and intriguing, but the music sounded just plain fun! And today it still sounds that way, although Zappa's later recordings are much more technically sound.

If you are more familiar with Zappa's later works, this is a good one to start off with for investigating his musical past. Although it was the second Mothers' album, it is much tighter than the first one, Freak Out! Songs like "Call Any Vegatable" and "Brown Shoes Don't Make It" became concert classics. And with this album, Zappa began to build subtle connections between all his records, with each including a reference to another. After all, how many different albums of his contain a reference to Suzy Creamcheese?

"Plastic People," "The Duke of Prunes", and of course "Brown Shoes Don't Make It," are probably my favorite tracks on this album, but I like all the tunes. And there is a thread of a theme throughout the album holding this collection of tunes together: the plasticity of American life. Even at 10 years old, I could see the phony world around me, and Zappa let me know that I wasn't the only cynic around.

It's a good one to pull out and listen to once in a while, but I must admit, there are other Zappa albums I listen to with greater frequency. Nonetheless, if you want to build a Zappa collection, you will need this one.
