I'm a big No Doubt advocate. I've loved them back since the self-titled days up to 'Return to Saturn'. I have to admit there are some great songs on 'Rock Steady' but, it's just not the same No Doubt. Well, we can see why after looking at this album. Gwen is definately to blame.
My girlfriend bought this the other day on a whim. I could immediately tell by the album cover art that this was not going to be pretty. Anyhow, I tried to give the album a chance. The fact that the gorgeous and gifted Gwen Stefani was behind this album forced me to give her the benefit of the doubt(pun intended).
What did I hear?
Basically, with the exception of three tracks, I heard nothing more than "songs" that sounded like a mix between 'Hey Baby' and every other meaningless/thoughtless/talentless rap song over and over. I mean, I truly gave each song a good listen to and still I can only find worthwhile in three tracks: 4(Cool), 9(Real Thing), and 11(Danger Zone). These tracks are all reminscent of the 80s. Everyone keeps writing reviews claiming the entire album is a flashback to the 80s. NO. That is wholly incorrect. I'll never ever forgive Gwen for releasing 1: such a horrible, talentless, and greedy little album and 2: putting a/the song 'Bubble Pop Electric' out for people to hear. It's entirely laughable.
The ONLY reason ANYONE WOULD EVER purchase this album is b/c it's GWEN STEFANI! If this were a newcomer, we would all laugh until they died. The lyrical content and the lack of talent and work on this album is disgusting yet unfortunately very real. I kept thinking to myself, "this must be a joke"!
This is cleary a continuing ploy to release an album based on a name rather than any heartfelt, hardworked album. Gwen has fallen victim to the disease known as "I'm now a big star and have forgotten where I came from. I'll just take the easy way out and make some more money by releasing the most talentless effort EVER!" There are no proven cures for this disease but, having fans wake up and realize their mentor has sunk to such a level and then realizing that they must stop buying this kind of crap, can help alleviate the pain of failure.
