Living it Up and Loving Every Moment by LiveItUp
Reviewed on January 19th, 2005
PRELUDE: John says [Come and go with me/There's something new for you to see]. And judging from the tone and texture of his voice, his claim isn't hard to believe. Somehow those few words effectively set the tone for the entire album. (10)
LET'S GET LIFTED: John's voice on this song just takes control of your ear. He's casting a spell so thick, it's hard to get out. But that's the plan, [Once you take a hit of this/You won't ever want to quit/You'll be so addicted]. He just tempting you with this song. He's daring you to keep listening. The he way he wraps he voice around the words, addicted may be an understatement. (10)
USED TO LOVE YOU: With a hint of sarcasm, slyness, and humor the words [Maybe I should rob somebody/So we could live like Whitney and Bobby/It's probably my fault, my bad, my loss/That you were above cost/And all I could do was love you] are refreshing. You have to feel for the guy because when was the last time you heard someone singing about not being able to afford something? (10)
ALRIGHT: John puts on his best swagger and cockiness for this song, [Hold up/I know you got a man but I'm tore up/And I don't even care if he rolled up/Wit somethin' to say/You better tell him he don't want it wit me]. He's definitely a ladies man. But what's unique about this song is John's ability to chase after the catchy beats without the richness of his voice fading. (10)
SHE DON'T HAVE TO KNOW: Onto John's softer, smoother, and jazzier side for this song. He not shy about playing up his more womanizing attributes. [Oh, it's getting crazy/And I don't wanna hurt my baby/And I know it's supposed to be the last time for you and I/But let's no end this way/Let's wait another day]. Judging by a few of these songs, I would guess that's it's kind of hard for John to say no. But he makes this song sound like a love song instead of a cheaters anthem. His voice is so flexible that he could make [I hate you] sound like [I love you]. (10)
NUMBER ONE: Hey, John doesn't want you to leave him just because he been around the block a few times. His mentor, Kanye West, makes an appearance on this track and cleverly makes light of the subject. (8)
I CAN CHANGE: Snoop Dogg opens this up with his trademark laidback style and John voice captures the angst and agony masterfully. He's believable when he says, [I see the light now, it's shining through/Gotta give up the game, yeah, I got some changing to do.] The wonderful choral voices accent this song appropriately. (10)
ORDINARY PEOPLE: This is strictly John and the piano. Although, after hearing his version on Jay Leno with a band, I would have liked more instrumentation on the album version. But this sort of things is difficult to do because some singers' voices aren't musical enough to strictly accompany a piano. John's is, so this song is nice to hear in its purest form. (9) STAY WITH YOU: I think is the most beautiful and endearing song on the album, definitely the most poetic. [As each morning brings the sunrise/And the flowers bloom in spring time/On my lovin' you can rely/I will stay with you]. (10)
LET'S GET LIFTED AGAIN: This is more like an interlude. It's not a complete song. I'm not sure if this interruption was really necessary at this point. (8)
SO HIGH: This one might be a little too conventional and predictable for me. This is the song that seems the most out of place. (8)
REFUGE (WHEN IT'S COLD OUTSIDE): One of John's greatest gifts is his ability to lift your spirit and that really comes through this song. [I prayed for better days to come/Prayed that I would see the sun/Cuz life is so burdensome/ when everyday's a rainy one]. After this song, I get the feeling that if the sun could hear John's voice that it would be shining all the time. It just has that affect on you. (10)
IT DON'T HAVE TO CHANGE: This song is very special because it's John, his piano, and the rest of his family joining him in song. The opening lines are a poignant moment for reflection: [Do you remember/When the family was everything?/Do you remember?/It was so long ago and much has changed/I wanna go back/ Wanna go back to those simple days/I wanna go back/But now we've grown and gone our separate ways]. (10)
LIVE IT UP: The best album closing song I've heard in awhile. With this final track, John Legend's album lives up to the expectations that its title set out to achieve. This is a classic. [Cuz now, everyday is feeling like Friday/I'm getting paid and doing it my way/We're finally on our way/Baby, now it's time to celebrate]. This song is constantly on repeat.(10)
If you're an R&B fan, then this album should not be missed. John Legend is laying down the foundation for something great.
