Great Work by John and Yoko by Keri "Librarian" Kentucky, United States
Reviewed on November 17th, 2001
Though much has been said against Yoko, both John and Yoko include some of their best work on "Double Fantasy" and both of them make this album as solid as it is.John's efforts on this album seem warm and perhaps sentimental when compared to his earlier work. However, John's pop sensibility is very strong on this album. These traits come through with the '50s inspired "(Just Like) Starting Over," the reflective "Watching the Wheels," and his songs for Sean and Yoko, such as "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)," "Woman," and a somewhat country inspired "Dear Yoko." While "I'm Losing You" captures lament in a great fashion, "Cleanup Time" is probably the least pop-friendly and oddly distant song of all of his very personal tracks on this album. As for Yoko, her songs on this album are considered among her most pop accessible. "Kiss Kiss Kiss" has a rather addictive melody (albeit with odd sound effects). "I'm Moving On" is a perfect complimenting piece for John's "I'm Losing You" with quirky lyrics and a good beat. "Beautiful Boys" is Yoko's most sentimental number, as the subjects of the song are her son and husband. It's a slow number with a great acoustic guitar and "Star Wars" type sound effects toward the end of the song. "Every Man Has a Woman Who Loves Him" is a well-written song with the added bonus of John's very solid harmony. As for Yoko's flops, "Give Me Something" has incredibly repetitive lyrics. "I'm Your Angel" seems like Yoko's failed attempt at creating a Flapper-era song. "Hard Times are Over" is not flawed so much as it is bland. Yoko, in rereleasing this album, had the good sense to not only oversee an incredible remastering and remixing of the album (it sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday) but also to include some bonus tracks. Among them is a great demo of John's "Help Me to Help Myself" with only John and a piano. Also included is Yoko's "Walking on Thin Ice," a song she recorded earlier in the day of John's death. It's among her strongest efforts. The final track is a short snippet of John walking and talking with Yoko, "two average people strolling" in Central Park. the bonus material makes an incredibly solid album even more solid. I highly recommend this album for anyone with ears that work.
