JOHN LENNON'S MUSIC 5 STARS, YOKO'S MUSIC 1 STAR. by bowery boy seattle
Reviewed on October 26th, 2001
Yoko Ono's songs aside, John Lennon's songs are some of the best music he ever wrote and performed. Track 1 begins with John's "(Just Like) Starting Over" with his songs skipping as the odd number songs through what was then side one of the album. Yoko's songs skip John's as the even numbered songs. Track 8 was the first song on side two of the original album and was John's "Watching The Wheels". John's songs now skip Yoko's songs as the even numbered songs with Yoko's being the odd numbered songs. In hindsight, they should have made all Yoko's songs the odd ones, and all John's songs the even ones. By now, you might have guessed that I don't much care for Yoko, and you'd be right. There were 13 original tracks on "Double Fantasy", 7 of them being John's and 6 of them being Oko's. Tracks 14 - 17 are additions to the remastered version. Tracks 14 & 16 being Oko's and tracks 15 & 17 being John's, although track 17 is merely the sound of walking on a sidewalk with John speaking to Oko, and it's only 17 seconds long. Again, I could really do without all of Yoko's songs, now numbering 8. It is John's 8 songs and the 17 second dialogue track that is essential, and what makes this CD a must have for any and all John Lennon fans."I'm Losing You" and "Watching The Wheels" are two of my personal favorite John Lennon songs. "Woman" is a very passionate recording. "Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)" was written for John's son Sean and is one of the most beautiful recordings I've ever heard anybody do. "(Just Like) Starting Over" is the rocker of the bunch, sounding very 1950's rockabilly. These songs represent the climax of John Lennon's career, they are some of the best work he'd ever done, and the fact that he died just weeks after the release of "DOUBLE FANTASY" does not prevent me from loving, and wanting to listen to this music. John didn't make this music for nothing. Endulge yourself and enjoy. This remaster is a very welcome addition to my CD collection. Even with Yoko Ono's 1 star presence, this is still worthy of a 5 star rating because John's music is so good here.
