A Star is Born

All you have to know -- this girl's as talented as they come, and she's well-supported on her first album here. She's been compared to a lot of other artists in the other reviews, and the only ones that are really apt are Janis Joplin and Joan Osborne (though she still has some growing up to do to match them, she looks very likely to). But the best comparison, which nobody here or anywhere else I've seen has made, is to another white Brit whose absorption and interpretation of American soul music is so good that the scoffers were quickly forced to yield in the face of overpowering performances -- Joe Cocker.All the songs are good, but the clear standout is "Fell In Love With a Boy" -- when I heard it I thought "this is a great, classic song, why have I never heard it before?". Then I saw that Stone had spotted a gem in the work of the contemporary band "White Stripes", and adapted it to fit her voice and style -- evidence of great musical taste as well as a great voice. Now I'm going to have to acquaint myself with other White songs. I can't wait for her "real" debut. With an interpretive talent like this, her original songs are bound to be interesting, but songwriting takes a long time to master unless your name is Bob Dylan so I'll be happy if the next album has a couple of keepers -- she can only get better.
