What a weird title for an album!!
This was my introduction to katatonia and i was hooked eversince. this is one of the most depressing records one will ever get to hear. The "depression factor" here is higher than any my dying bride or Anathema album. THAT's how depressing it is. The above mentioned bands' lyrical romanticism gives an atmosphere of grandeur that lifts you up no matter how dark and sad the tune sounds. Katatonia however, are unceremonious: their music brings the smell of dampness, decay and death out of the speakers and into your nostrils. their atmosphere is full of pessimism and disillusion. you nearly visualize your own rotten carcass being rushed upon by rats, in some dark sewer. that's how tragic it is. if you can still smile after the music's over then you're a granit block. Mike akerfeldt has inherited his growl straight from the abyss. it's the voice of a monster and this monster shows no mercy on "Brave" "murder" "12" "rainroom" and "endtime". it took me a while to fully appreciate "day" -a song with clear vocals done by Renske- because it struck me as very odd in an album that has all the warmth of a graveyard. it's by no means a bad song. the bonus "for funerals..." EP added to the album is also of the same caliber of the cold, brooding monuments of doom/black metal majesty mentioned above. for the sheer ambiance of it, this album deserves 10 stars. the music, repetitive at times, is found monotonous by the undiscerning ear, but is far from being so in reality. the almost mechanical rythmic recurrence is only conveying the rigidity of death. hail!
