I have been a Katatonia fan ever since Brave Murder Day came out. I would have started with Dance of December Souls but it is really hard to get. I finally received DODS and I was impressed but not nearly as impressed as I was with Brave Murder Day. Being a fan of Doom metal (Theater of Tragedy, old Paradise Lost, old Anathema, and Opeth who is not Doom, but they create a similar atmosphere), I know what I'm talking about, and Brave Murder Day is definitely their best album. The best songs are Brave and Rainroom. This may be by default since they are the two songs that Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth lends his roar the most. For the record, Jonas Renske was not able to do his black metal rasp thing, like he did in Dance of December Souls. The production is crystal clear. While not a huge fan of Tonight's Decision or Last Fair Deal Gone Down, I do appreciat those albums and pull them out for an occasional listen, but I pull Discouraged Ones out even more. However, Brave Murder Day is listened to constantly, like Turn Loose the Swans, Gothic and Orchid. Along with DODS, Brave Murder Day is Katatonia's least accessable album. So if you want almost radio friendly music, get their two latest releases.... If you want to see their roots, get DODS. But if you want powerful moody, sometimes scary music, get Brave Murder Day. Nevermind, you're probably not strong enough for this album.
