One of the joys in life is discovering music that moves us in a good way, whether it was released years ago or only just recently. Such is the case for me with Los Lonely Boys.
Not really being in touch with what is being played on popular radio these days, I recently discovered this band after reading an article in Tracks magazine in which they shared the cover with Willie Nelson. Willie pumped them up pretty good, so I gave them a listen. I had not heard "Heaven" before.
Not knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed. Henry Garza is a very, very good guitarist and this recording includes enough solid tracks to leave me enthusiastic about the band's potential.
I was particularly intrigued by the Stevie Ray Vaughan and Carlos Santana-influenced "Crazy Dream" (5.0+ stars), "Onda (4.5 stars), "Real Emotions (4.5 stars) and "Tell Me Why(4.5 stars). "More than Love" is interesting for its Ritchie Valens influences.
The band seems to be playing the middle of the road here. There is something for everyone. The rest of the tracks are pleasant little pop ditties or border on the latin heartthrob side of things. For me, they are rather forgettable - except that there is always the ever-present solid guitar work.
Personally, I would like to see them move more toward the SRV/Santana side of the street in the future. However, I suspect we will hear more of the same on their next record. They seem to have found a successful formula and it would be hard to blame them for wanting to milk it for all they can.
Maybe Henry will launch a successful side career that will satisfy some of us old guys who like living in the past. I cannot help but feel that there is something special and explosive lurking in the soul of Henry Garza that will have to bust loose at some point. He is just too good for the capriciousness of commercial music. I can only hope.
