It's easy to dismiss the Sex Pistols debut (and finale) as a fitting example of an oft-overrated album. Was it the first punk album? No. Was it revolutionary? Depends on your viewpoint. Was it even the best album to emerge from the punk genre? The jury is still out. But, oh does it rock? You bet your bollocks it does! What the Pistols brought to the table with this album was and remains one of the most irreverent, dangerous, and pulverizing musical statements in music history. While the Ramones may have provided the blueprint for punk rock, the Boys from Britain certainly provided it with its ever-glorious sneer.
Johnny Rotten sounds like a mad hyena waiting to tear out of your speakers and grab you by the throat as he spits forth memorable manifesto's like, "God save the Queen, we mean it maaaaaann!!!" and "Get Pissed, Destroy!" Meanwhile, Steve Jones' razor-sharp guitar spews venom throughout leaving a path of destruction in its wake. It's raw, unforgiving, deceptively humorous, often distasteful, undeniably exuberant, and above all a marked return to the meat and potatoes approach of good ol' no fluff rock and roll. Classics such as "Holiday In The Sun," "No Feelings," "Pretty Vacant," and the infamous "Anarchy In the UK," will soon have you realizing what all the fuss is about. While others since have managed to do it better and with more consistency, few can claim that they shocked the system the way the Pistols managed to in '77. Not only is it an essential punk album, but arguably one of the greatest statements in the history of rock n' roll.
