Sin Against The Sex Type Thing Within The Wicked Garden!!!!! by Bitter Colossus Of Rhodes "Phalanx Fighting Formation" Maynard's Dick
Reviewed on September 2nd, 2004
Core IS the textbook role model to follow for struggling, novice musicians who aspire to be recognized and make an impact from, what was theretofore, obscure oblivion. All measures that any band could strive for to single-handedly excel in the most serious areas of an impacting band have been skillfully and naturally satisfied by S.T.P. in their attention-grabbing debut. S.T.P, at the recording of this cd, might not have even remarked that their beginner's attempt would sound like a band in its prime. Factors that establish any band as dominant, which were present at the onset of their career, are intimidating, barking vocals; furious drumming; energy unleashed on each song; soaring guitar work; and the most important element: hostile, macabre themes complemented by turbulent beats and riffs. This is unprecedented output from guys who were in their mid-20's, except for old guy Dean DeLeo. Core, along with Purple, is S.T.P's greatest work achieved.
Every song exudes earth-shattering, ear-breaking pounding, a staple for grunge afficianados. It doesn't succumb to today's basest, loser bands' standards of jumbling together asinine lyrics and thinking with unrefined instruments abused to the highest setting. Though Weiland's lyrics are more-often-than-not nonsensical (like including clashing statements in one sentence), and sometimes a hard dilemma to figure out what mystery he's pertaining to, enough trickles through to appreciate the effort that went into the seemingly retarded lyrics. The lyrics may as well be considered poetry, since in poetry, the often perverse authors also resort to including enigmatic, difficult-to-understand, clashing ideas, which are supposed to symbolize some self-righteous meaning. Remarkable, to hear Weiland's voice before he collapsed it to the womanliness it tragically is today on some of the more NOTORIOUSLY later-stage S.T.P outings, most infamously Shangri-La-Dee-Da, although in their last band offering, All in the Suit that You Wear, Weiland's redeemed his uneasy vocals abilities into something more parallel to Core. Such a freeing, unbridled outlet of energy AND emotion, that Weiland's voice USED to be, is almost inspirational. The singing on this cd is a model to listen to. The wordless music is something to behold. It's angry in its tone and gait that it's played with, but not in a destructive way. It's so done to push the boundaries of emotion and energy release, in a purgation of feelings that they couldn't express otherwise.
The songs maintain acrimonious fierceness, the ideal of any good grunge song, earning S.T.P the 7 million sold status of Core, throughout. Did Weiland start this brainchild of singing lyrics through a megaphone? Sounding imposing as an alternative, it's displayed immediately on Dead and Bloated. What proceeds corroded-sounding, explodes into a rough, grating melody. Weiland's singing is awesomely confrontational, like he's being malignant to somebody, the lyrical comparing of roses to a deathbed is profound juxtaposition and the bridge that this song reaches in the middle sounds awe-inspiring.
Sex Type Thing's lyrics deal with rape, which I like, not because of rape, but because of controversial lyrics. The song is loud, raging intimidation and brainwashes an infectiously hummable melody into your brain.
Wicked Garden's drums at the start and finish set a change of pace from the grungy numbers that straightaway swarm into the song. More long-range belting out of Weiland and a shredding winding-up of guitars trademark it.
Sin is kindly long, and has a stellar DeLeo solo at the end-although this solo is kind of tormentingly squandered, as the listener is lured to resentfully wait the whole six minutes before DeLeo comes in. Sin dependably contains more of S.T.P's grinding, riffing, storming charge that acclaimed Core and built its fanbase.
Naked Sunday is the greatest, in regards to innovation. The chorus is simple, yet that's what gives it its renown because it's SO childishly basic, yet is intrusively catchy and will cause dictatorial submission to it. There's more bullhorn singing and a powerful bridge.
I repulsed Creep first, then its slow introspection and low-key, haunting march drew me in. It's a deep, soul-searching song, obviously about some woman, but Weiland's sort-of-intimate narrative about the protagonist's feelings is the convincer.
Despite the fact that I think Piece of Pie's words are meaningless, its distortedly concealed meaning can be looked at from the somewhat disingenuously impairing viewpoint of carrying lots of symbolic value, which, again unluckily, is not easily understood by the listener. Half of it's sung by bullhorn distortion, there's splintering solo and it's chorus is epic-Weiland resorts to an exorbitance of bellowing screams, with DeLeo's guitar backing them up in sonic turbulence.
Plush, their defining, juggernaut song, is diminished by its mistreated coverage, but it's transparent to see why it's incontestably their most famous creation. Kretz's drumming is strongly heavy, Weiland roars like an untamable madman in the chorus and versus, and the DeLeo's shredding is relentless.
Crackerman is the most addictively catchy. A quick beat, megaphone chorus, and anxious pauses between the verses contribute to Crackerman's stored energy.
I've to, in addendum, amend earlier feelings I had towards the songs Where The River Goes. Disfavorably for me, I apparently misjudged the awing quality of those two songs. Where The River Goes was misjudged quite possibly due to its length, although that's insincere because I can stomach Tool's songs. In likelihood, I neglected to retry this song as my goodwill to S.T.P's other songs was growing. This song's defined by DeLeo's scathing guitar-playing, especially at the end and beginning, and also Weiland's booming vocals, as he stressfully over-exaggerates his enunciations on all the lyrics!!!!
Weiland and his old lady recently got the ever-popular DEE-vorce, S.T.P have reportedly BROKEN UP, and Weiland's been weighed down by hard legal adversities. Weiland's fled to Velvet Revolver, where there'll hopefully be the same energetic fierceness, resulting from predicaments. Only then will there be an equivalent masterpiece of the same scope of musical drive that inspired Core. Otherwise, if his divorce still doesn't drive this Junkhead, peaked, once-great singer-then S.T.P should bury their careers right next to Pearl Jam's of the present day.
