Excellent debut

In the late eighties and early nineties, the music industry underwent a radical change. While hair metal and new wave ruled the eighties, alternative/grunge rock quickly became the dominant musical style in the nineties. A number of bands were changing the way music was done. Among them were Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Nine Inch Nails, and of course, The Stone Temple Pilots. For over a decade the band has been delivering some of the finest alternative rock out there. But how does their 1992 debut album measure up? Read on and find out.

A band's debut album can be one of two things - It can either be a desperate cry for help that the artist needs to find a sound, or a masterpiece of an album that captures that artist in their prime. For the most part, STP's first album is the latter. The band doesn't waste any time getting right down to the good stuff. Dead And Bloated, Sex Type Thing, and Wicked Garden, the album's first three tracks, are grunge rock masterpieces that still get radio play, even to this day. It's no surprise that these songs became some of the band's biggest hits. One of the band's more interesting tracks, Plush, also appears here. This is an interesting track in that is fuses elements of hard alternative rock with more melodic stylings. Not surprisingly, it has also become a big hit. Another big hit the band scored on this album is Creep. This is gloomy melodic rock the way it was meant to be heard. In my opinion, it's the finest track on the album. However, like any band, there's a good deal more to STP than just their big hits. Every track on this album is excellent. Don't let the rating of four out of five fool you - this is an excellent album that belongs in the collection of any fan of nineties alternative rock.

My final verdict? There's really no excuse not to own this album if you're a fan of alternative/grunge rock from the nineties. As with any band, I recommend buying all of the band's albums rather than their hits compilation (the band's hits compilation features an unplugged version of Plush that lacks the expertise of the original version featured on this album, and there are also some surprising omissions on it.) Once again, this is a highly recommended album, just waiting to be added to your collection.
