The Kick in Purple Is Deeper Than Many Will Have You Believe

People go on about the brilliance of 'Interstate Love Song' and 'Big Empty' the two biggest hits from the album. Many of the listeners are, lets be polite, simple life forms...and fail to see beyond the obvious, or think for themselves and just go along with everyone else saying 'hey, Interstate Love Song really rocks, not sure about that weird Kitchenware and whatever thing'. Don't listen to these people. Don't get me wrong I like the smash hits from Purple, but there are far greater things if you JUST LISTEN.
Meatplow instantly brings back memories of Core, I can just imagine the long-haired hippie student high on weed, massive Core fan sticking in Purple and hearing the first few chords, 'whoa cool man'. Meatplow is nonetheless a good songs with a very catchy hook. Unfortunately for our hippie friend he gets splatted with some of the most sadistcal, psychadelic, disturbing music ever produced. But hell, he doesn't know it.
Lounge Fly is excellent, sadisctic, and the F word. Something the hippie will relish from this totally un-Core-ish album. Still Remains is the best work STP ever done, and one of my favourite songs of all time. It's decievingly dark, and portrays a difficult drug surfacing for Weiland with lyrics such as - 'If you should die first, ask if you could bring a friend' - Of course our generic American no-brainer (no digs honestly) won't pick up subtlety.
The closer sums up Purple, I mean Kitchenware & Candybars, not the hidden Led Zep cover that stinks. K & C is a classic, STP's second best work ever, it's just fantastic, it leaves you thinking 'were they actually out of their mind, or do they know something I don't, are they in fact happy, or as self-destructive as you would predict' It's a make-you-think song, the lyrics are often misleading but send a general message that Weiland's depressed, and I would imagine heavily addicted at this point. The chorus lyric 'What I wanted, is what I wanted' suggests Weiland hasn't got what he wanted, whether it be out of life, well your guess is as good as mine. Well, who's completely satisfied with life?
There are real psycho songs such as Vaseline and 'Unglued' which reflect the good side of drugs - the getting high bit. Well, the best song ever is all about getting high (Stairway To Heaven). Why not eh? - The answer to that lies in the rest of the album - it makes you depressed, self-destructive, psycho and way too life reflective. But it makes genius albums like Led Zep IV, and to a less extent STP's Purple. Thank God for drug addictive music artists.
Purple is, on a whole, a very deep album, obviously influenced by drug addictions, but lets face it, what good album isn't?
