She Sells Sanctuary is the perfect goth tune. Repetitve lyrics about paranoia, awesome drumming and bass work from the bands rhythm section, fascinating layered psychedelic guitars from the master Billy Duffy. The drummer left before the rest of the LP was recorded, and was replaced by the brilliant Mark Brzezicki from Big Country. I make dance music now, but still find many similarities between these disparate styles, and word has it the band guzzled MDMA in the US during their tour in 1985. Some remixes of Sanctuary are decidedly dancey, even excluding one from a few years back, in the mid 90's. Very little by the Cult comes close to the brilliance of Love, but Dreamtime is worth hearing as it illustrates the bands progress. Fame went to their heads, I reckon, they turned away from goth in favour of a heavier sound which did nothing for me. Check my view on Dreamtime, and buy this CD, it's a beauty!
