and now....Act Two.

by Demetrius A. Armstrong Huntington, WV USA
Reviewed on January 14th, 2005

The resurgence of the post-punk movement at the turn of this decade has always felt like a trend, even though it's brooding mood paints a perfect picture of it. Now that it has gone into act two, the trend is in real danger of lasting longer than the original era that inspired it. The Killers comes in after Interpol, The Strokes, and now Modest Mouse and Franz Ferdinand to solidify this sound as something that's going to stay around for a while for better or worse. There are aspects of this style of making music that never gets old, but year after year after year does put it's limitations in sharp relief. "Hot Fuss" is a very solid album that marries some of the best aspects of bands that have inspired The Killers from both eras of this movement. The glacier however has already taken enough people by surprise, and now they know what to expect. That's one of the main anchors keeping this album out of orbit. This sound is just not "the hot new thing" anymore. Those who do appreciate it all the better anyway will find total satisfaction in "Hot Fuss", as there is more than enough here to satisfy any post-punk lover's appetite.

"On Top", "Believe Me Natalie", "Smile Like You Mean It", and "Somebody Told Me" are as good as anything you'll find on an album like this. While the lack lyrical ingenuity is certainly something that betrays them at times (lines like "I got soul/but I'm not a soldier" are slightly less than forgivable), the style, as with similar bands (Interpol for example) is enough to make up the distance left by those shortcomings. Most people who buy these records have no idea who Ian Curtis is, so it proves to be a very escapable standard. Even those of us who do tend to overlook such things because the thrill that bands like this even exist is still more than enough to warrant looking the other way. "Hot Fuss" is definitely not something that's not worth any fans of bands like The Killers time. Even though it appears a slight bit more contrived now, a few years in. It only seems that way, albums like this have always been very well produced slick things, but now with bands like The Killers who take their cues from bands who take their cues from a previous set, it just becomes a little harder to ignore.

(Order the US version, or get the digital. Avoid the UK version of this album like the plague. "Indie Rock and Roll" is truly bad, the US track is much better.....I happened to download mine so I have them both).
