Brandon Flowers & The Killers NAIL their debut

Eleven songs and approximately forty-six minutes later, I was left scratching my head. Where did these guys come from? Okay, so I read they're from Las Vegas, NV. I am always looking for new music - yet how did I miss the debut "Hot Fuss" from The Killers? Thank you ZIA's CD & Record Exchange in Phoenix (AZ) for playing "Hot Fuss" while I was shopping there one day. Frontman singer and keyboard player Brandon Flowers (and bandmates Dave Keuning-guitar, Ronnie Vannucci-drums, and Mark Stoemer-bass) have written some incredibly catchy music in 2004. I truly feel that if these guys can stay together and keep manufacturing great songs - they'll enjoy an incredible ride in the music industry. There are several relatively new alt/rock bands in 2004 with potential... namely Snow Patrol, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, Keane, Modest Mouse, etc... but I give the Rookie-Of-The-Year award to THE KILLERS. You'll listen to "Hot Fuss" and think... I know this sound. These guys sound like 'somebody'. Something new, but definitely in the 1980's vein. Perhaps a little bit of the Psychadelic Furs, some of The Knack... who knows. Smart songs, some synth/electro intro's that fade into catchy guitars and smart hooks. Two songs even feature a full blown choir. I lean toward the heavier songs - my favorites being "Smile Like You Mean It", "Somebody Told Me", "All These Things That I've Done". Least favorite song is "Andy, You're A Star". Listen to the sound clips here on Amazon and you'll hear the rock roots (more rock & pop than anything else, like alternative, indie, etc). I thoroughly enjoy finding new music that I never knew even existed. Try "Hot Fuss". The new (and old!) rock fans will dig it.
