This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Anne of Green Gables is the story of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and headstrong orphan. When brother and sister Marilla and Mathew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew work the farm, they are astonished when Anne arrives at the train station by mistake. "What use is she to us?" grumbles the gruff Marilla. "We might be of some use to her," answers Matthew, who has taken an instant liking to the talkative Anne. As Anne grows up, her adventures are both hilarious and moving. It's a delight to watch as she forms a friendship with the beautiful Diana and her admirer--the dashing Gilbert Blythe--then dyes her hair green, cracks a slate over Gilbert's head when he calls her "Carrots," and finds a sympathetic teacher who encourages her to attend college. Richard Farnsworth is perfect as the shy and gentle bachelor Matthew, who confides to Anne that he never went courting because "I would have had to say something." Colleen Dewhurst delivers a nuanced and powerful performance as Marilla, a seemingly cold-hearted spinster whose no-nonsense exterior conceals a warm heart. And as Anne, Megan Follows strikes the perfect note, maturing from freckle-faced orphan to elegant and poised young woman. --Elisabeth Keating

Summary: GOOD FOR FANS
Comment: this is the best in the three part series. it follows the book almost to a "T" and the acting is splendid. if you have children who are yet too young to read, this is a great way to share the ANNE OF GREEN GABLES experience with them.

Summary: Childhood memories
Comment: I remember PBS running "Anne of Green Gables" during their fundraisers. I fell in love with the story and imagery before I was ready to delve into the book series, and once I was able to do that, I thoroughly enjoyed both. Watching this now brings back wonderful memories of lazy Saturday afternoons spent curled up on the sofa for hours. It is a great family film to be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Summary: Beyond Delightful, and for everyone.
Comment: Two things captivated me in these films. One was the incredible scope of Megan Follows' performance, as she plays Anne through three phases of her life. Simply marvelous. And second, that though the stories will appeal to all audiences, they were mainly about Anne's serious interaction with other women --her step mother, friends in school, women of the town, women at college, women where Anne goes to teach and finally even women in Europe during the war. There are plenty of strong men in the series, and wonderful actors, but these fine interesting relationships make this a top notch film in many respects. The photography was very simply gorgeous. I recommend this as top flight family entertainment, and of interest to people of all ages, really. It's a stunning portrait for a creative and imaginative woman who becomes a writer, and is a person who brings out the best in just about everyone she meets. Positive, deep, beautiful, brilliant. Enjoy with all your heart.

Comment: I first viewed Anne on television and fell in love with Megan. I longed for more of her story. Then I saw the second part and still wanted to see more. I bought the book and enjoyed it, but still, wanted more. At last I've seen all of the DVDs and still wanted more. I purchased Anne of Green Gables from Amazon and now have "the more at my leisure" with my cup of hot tea. Wonderful family viewing!Beautiful, breathtaking scenery. Take this trip with me!

Comment: I have loved Anne of Green Gables for years. I did not know until recently that there were 3 of these wonderful little shows. I saw them on PBS and I just had to purchase them so I could watch her all the time!
