Customer Rating: Summary: Look out, A-ko! Comment: If you dug PROJECT A-KO, then MARIS THE CHOJO is for you. Originally given the English title THE SUPERGAL and MARIS THE WONDERGAL, this animated version of Rumiko Takahashi's RUMIC WORLD manga is the only real comedy from the whole RM anime line-up. The others involve horror or action. Maris is from a race of people whose planet blew up, and outside their own world they have amazing superstrength. But to keep their powers in check, they have to wear restraints. Maris used her powers as an wrestler, but then later joined the Special Space Police. She and her shapechanging fox partner hunt down criminals for a small profit, unfortunately, all of Maris' funds go towards paying off the damage her parents cause. Then, she gets the case of a lifetime, to rescue a handsome heir to a galactic fortune from a mysterious kidnapper. Maris sets out to free her wouldbe financial fiance, but the kidnapper's partner, Suzy(who's a dead-ringer for RAYEARTH's Umi), is also a superpowered ex-wrestler and former rival of Maris. After one little shoot out with her in a decrepped old spacefrieghter, Maris returns in an even more broken down rocketship for the final fight which is a wrestling match to the death. This is one of Takahashi's(the creator of RANMA 1/2)better one-shot stories. It's probably an even better sci-fi comedy than her URUSEI YATSURA series that unfortunately didn't get as extended as it. MARIS THE CHOJO has lots of fun and fanservice. Buy it today! Customer Rating: Summary: Just read the manga version... Comment: Maris the Chojo is one of renowned manga artist Ms. Rumiko Takahashi's early works. The original manga version is simple, short, and sweet. Unfortunately, the anime version I'm reviewing now is the exact opposite. While the zany plot is more or less retained, the execution is what kills the MTC anime. Things unfold slowly, and everything just gets so long-winded. There are lots of useless panning through scenes where characters traverse - whether walking on land or flying through space. I marvel at how they managed to extend a very short manga story to a 45-minute anime feature. The art and animation are okay. The overall look and feel are somewhat dated but it's generally not bad. Customer Rating: Summary: A personal favorite; I want DVD version! Comment: Actually, there aren't enough "girl too strong for her own good" animes for me. Can't think of any others with that exact theme, in fact, and it's a really fun one. This anime explores that theme and many other interesting ones, including how money doesn't make you a better person. And as far as strength, Maris is truly in the extreme class, like 1,000,000x plus, and here we have a number of impressive fights and accidents to show it off, and they're all fun. She can hardly move without breaking something. This VHS suffers from the usual lame dubbed soundtrack, but it's all you can get. Order it now to encourage them to make a DVD version. Unfortunately this seems to be falling below the radar, but it's great. I'd love to have this in DVD with the original sound and subtitles. And lots more amime girls actually using and misusing extreme strength a lot. Customer Rating: Summary: Very Entertaining Comment: Another "girl too strong for her own good" anime. Maris is in trouble, her parents are always breaking things (and expecting her to pay for it), she owes for 4 space craft herself, and she just can't seem to break even. Her partner, Murphy the 9 tailed transforming fox adds to the story. It is funny in the "kicking them while they're down" and "accidental mayhem" sort of way. And let us not forget the outtakes at the end... Author Rumiko Takahashi does a good job of telling the story, though it may have lost something in the translation.
