Summary: Old Macs Stay Home
Comment: I had this item on my wish list, and before asking someone to plunk down their hard-earned cash for it, I decided to try the demo.
I have a PowerMac, G5, dual-core PowerPC wth 2 GB of RAM. It ran like dog meat on my machine, and I don't consider my machine to be all that old.
A quick google of Aperture 2 vs Lightroom 2 came up with an article by O'Reilly that confirmed what I was experiencing. Apparently, Apple decided to architect this software to require a fairly robust machine to run optimally. I would imagine it runs great on the newer Intel chip based machines, but on the PowerPC Macs, it is excruciatingly slow. I can only imagine that Apple will provide an update at some point to address this, but there is no guarantee that will happen.
I run Final Cut Pro on my Mac, and it runs fine, which indicates to me that my machine should be perfectly capable of running photograph editing software.
I was very disappointed about this. I really like the feature-set of Aperture and was looking forward to having it as an additional tool for my fledgling photography business. I'm now running the Lightroom 2 demo, and it is significantly faster then Aperture 2.1. It is not lightening fast, but it is fast enough to be usable. I'm becoming familiar with its interface and available features, and I'm finding it does a good job meeting my expectations.
However, don't let any marketing videos or flash demos fool you, so far, I haven't seen any photo management software for Macs of my vintage that run as fast and efficiently as advertised, and that includes Lightroom. I'll probably ask for Lightroom, but I would have preferred Aperture had it run efficiently.
Apple, if you're reading these reviews, I think you're architecting yourself out of this market and alienating existing customers by selling a product that is clearly not usable on relatively recent equipment. The very least you could have done was make a strong recommendation for a new, fast Mac to run this software properly. At least you offer a free 30-day demo, but the fact is, this product should not be marketed to customers with older Macs.
If this trend continues, I will probably be forced to abandon the Mac platform. I simply cannot afford to replace $3 to $5,000 machines every 3 to 4 years simply because software vendors abandon the existing user base. I can understand Apple's motivation behind this ($$$), but even Adobe's product could run better on my machine. After all, it's just a photo management product, and if Photoshop Elements 4 can run lightening fast on my Mac, I don't see why Lightroom can't. Maybe if they did away with all the fancy user interface graphics and unnecessary eye candy, it might run better on older, but relatively new machines.

Summary: A MUST HAVE
Comment: APERTURE 2 for MAC is a complex program. You will need to get a large detailed manual, or better yet, sign up for some classes at your Apple store. There are plenty of photo editing tools, all of the usual ones plus plenty more, allowing you to be as creative as you want to be. But probably the main purpose of this program is a way to organize and categorize your images within Aperture. In iPhoto, I have so many copies of the same image in so many folders, and sometimes the one I want is still hard to find. Aperture gets you away from folders. It takes time to do it right, but when you do, finding the image you want is a breeze. You assign various keywords to each image, whichever ones are appropriate for you, and as many as you want per image. When you complete that project, you can search by any keyword, and all of the images you have assigned that keyword to will show up. It couldn't be easier. But you will need help in getting this done so you do it right. I take classes at my Apple store, the One-to-One classes.

Summary: Not a bad Step Up
Comment: I purchased this product because I was looking for something more than just the iphoto my Mac comes with. I can tell that I have opened the door to a whole new world. This product was cheaper than an Adobe Pro program and better than Photo shop Elements. I am overal happy with my purchase and I look forward to getting all that I can out of this.

Summary: Thoroughly Pleased with Aperture 2
Comment: I am an amateur at best and I took advantage of both free trial offers from Aperture 2 and LightRoom. Although LightRoom was similar, to me there was no comparison. I went into it with no experience and was totally objective in my opinion and found Aperture to be much much better. Used the same photo in both and consistently got better results in Aperture, with a more seamless flow to the work. One mans opinion !!

Summary: Aperture Vs Nikon Capture NX2
Comment: I used the trial version of Aperture and Nikon Capture NX2 back to back for about a month. Both are great programs and I believe I would be happy with either. Ultimately I choose Aperture for its familiar interface and believe Apple will continue to ensure compatibility with OSX for a long time to come. Nikon support is excellent but their new proprietary RAW format that works only with Microsoft Windows took me by surprise. Not that I am affected because so far the new RAW format is only on their point and shoot cameras, I still felt slightly betrayed and uncertain what the future relationship with Apple will be. I figure no matter what happens I will still be able to use the same software to catalog and edit my photos.
