Customer Rating: Summary: Awesome Comment: I have to add my praise to this TV as well. I was in the market for a new tv, and was close to going with a 32 inch westinghouse. The Maxent was right above the Westinghouse at best buy, and the quality was much better. It was on sale for about 1000 which was pretty good for a 42 inch plasma tv.I too had not heard of Maxent much before, but the quality and price was undeniable. I was worried that I would get it home, be impress for a few weeks, then something would go wrong with it. I did some research, and most reviews were positive. In fact, I couldnt find any negative reviews on the TV. I don't really watch cable, I mainly just use it for DVD's and PS2, and the quality is light years ahead of my old 25 inch RCA CRT.
I upgraded my PS2's cable connector to Hi-def input, and the quality got noticeably better. The textures in my game were sharper and clearer, anti-aliasing was much smoother, it just all in all looked better. I bought a Peerless mount from amazon, mounted it up, and it looks really nice (despite some hanging wires). So far the tv has done well, no problems with image quality or it going out. I've had it since christmas.
I don't know about buying these tv's online, just seems like too many things can go wrong with shipping and what not. Amazon always has good prices, so if you find one on sale here I would get it. Customer Rating: Summary: Don't let the brand name fool you... Comment: I actually bought the 50" version of this TV three months ago, and I couldn't be happier with my choice. I was leery of the brand as well, having only seen it advertised on (what I would consider) less than well-known retailers websites. I did some more digging, however, and this is what I discovered:
Maxent, or at least the important components for Maxent TVs, are actually manufactured by Panasonic. The panel, which is the most expensive and important component of a plasma television, is included in this statement. So, while you might (as another reviewer has stated) spend more money to get a big-name brand, if that's really what you want; I submit to you that you're merely wasting your money.
I was finally able to get an up-close and personal viewing of the television at the local Costco, and I was impressed with much more than the price tag. The images are sharp, clean, and bright at any angle. I decided on the 50", and after much whining, my wife finally let me buy it to shut me up. We're both pleased with how that decision has played out, with one (minor) exception... in a Costco warehouse setting, a 50-inch television doesn't seem so big. Getting it home to the family room is an entirely different story-- this television is ENORMOUS!
Hey, we'll just have to cope. Customer Rating: Summary: Great Buy for the Money Comment: I spent the better part of 6 months looking at plasma TV's and could not find anything close to the quality of this Maxent MX-42HPM20 near the same price range. Contrast Ratio is definitely one of the key factors in Plasma TV's and at 10000:1 you can definitely see the difference. This TV equals the high end products in the 42 inch line. I have had it for four months now, bought it from Best Buy (get the extended warranty, its worth it on plasmas of any kind you decide to buy). When lined up with rival brands the guy had a row hooked up to a blue ray player, the difference was unbelievable. Maxent had the best picture in the lineup of different brands of the same size, same contrast ratio, etc. KEEP IN MIND THERE IS NO BUILT IN TUNER. YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN HD SOURCE (CABLE BOX, SATELLITE BOX). Other than that, there is no reason to spend 500 or 600 dollars OR more for a "brand name". We will always use satellite or cable so not having a built in tuner did not matter to us. My family and I have been very happy with this product and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Customer Rating: Summary: Rivaling Image Quality from a Respectable Price Comment: This Maxent television surprisingly brings the quality of a high end top name brand model to a decent respectable price in an entry level plasma. An associate in the store debated with me on the importance of buying a name brand for more money, my rebuttal was "If I buy the name brand with lesser image quality or the not so known name brand for better quality and purchase the protection plan for either than what difference does it make? You will replace both in any case of poor manufacturing." The associate could not disagree with my point and I doubt many people can.
Take a look at this Plasma but MAKE SURE you are looking at this model, the mx-42hpm20 and not the old model because Maxent has really hit the nail on the head with this model.
I spent a year researching plasmas and was not impressed with the image quality to price ratio that the top brand names were charging. All the entry level models made by top name brands such as Samsung, Panasonic, etc... They all seem to have poor image quality whether it be the grainy constantly pixilating image from the HP PL4260N or the washed out smokey image from the Toshiba 42HP66. None the less every entry level top name brand I looked at seemed to be a story of "this one is too hot and this one is too cold." For name brand you have to spend the money on the best models.
I started looking at cheaper models from my local wholesale house and was extremely disappointed from the Vizio 42" plasma displays that were very cheap. Vizio's plasma image does not have an impressive image at all for a television in general let alone a plasma.
There were two models of the Maxent that I looked at. The old 42" Plasma model was on sale for 20% as an open box item from my local electronics giant but the colors were not correct at all and it looked down right cheap. I completely ruled out Maxent. Then I went to another location and found the new 42" Maxent model (mx-42hpm20) and it was extremely impressive rivaling the $3000+ range models from the top brand names. Very, very, impressive.
Bottom Line...
If you have $3,000 to spend on the Hitachi 42HDS69 than go for it. But if you can deal with seeing "Maxent" on your wall with the same quality for less than 1/2 the price then this is the Plasma for you. I cannot stress enough that this is the best plasma in its price range; I spend a year looking everywhere examining every aspect. This is the one.
Never buy a plasma without a protection plan!!! Never! Manufacturer warrantees are garbage. You'll wind up making payments on a broken TV that sits in your living room for months while the manufacturer "decides" on what they can do for you.
