Editorial Reviews:

Down To Earth is the 2008 album by Jem. Since her 2004's acclaimed Finally Woken, Jem has spanned the globe. Born in Wales, she resides in LA. On Down to Earth Jem shared production and writing duties with cohorts both old and new, Jeff Bass, one of the two brothers credited with discovering Eminem, and Lester Mendez (Shakira, Santana, and Nelly Furtado). On three other selections, she joined forces with Mike Bradford (bass with Kid Rock) and counts Uncle Kracker and Deep Purple among his production credits. The album reflects the singer/songwriters far-ranging influences including Brazilian percussion on the title track, a hip shaking track complete with funky banjos on 'Crazy' and the tempestuous Latin-flavored track 'I Want You To'.

Summary: "Becoming a bitch is not what I got into music for"
Comment: So you're pretty much going to see two camps here - those that preferred Finally Woken, and those that prefer Down to Earth. I fall into the latter camp, though I am still quite a fan of FW. The only problem is that her first album felt like a grab-bag of different experiments. Down to Earth is more cohesive, creating an ethereal kind of spacey vibe. I must say that "It's Amazing" is one of the most inspiring and uplifting songs I've heard in a long time. "I Always Knew" is one of those revenge songs you want to play loudly whenever someone is annoying you.

And there you go...another vote for Earth. I think the only thing we're all going to agree on is that Jem has much talent she has yet to explore. I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next, and I hope it doesn't take four more years to find out.

Summary: I detect a lack of energy
Comment: This is sub-par to Finally Woken but still a very decent effort. There's nothing extremely catchy here like "They" or "Wish I" and Jem sounds downright sleepy at times. I was hoping this would sparkle as much as her previous gem but maybe the next time she'll master it again.

Summary: As good as the first one!
Comment: If you liked her first album, this is just as good if not better. If you never heard the first, this is a great album with catchy tunes and a melodic voice. I highly recommend it.

Summary: refreshing, relaxing, well-written music
Comment: If you liked her first album, this is a must own. In my opinion, there is only one bad track and at least 5 excellent songs. The rest are great for relaxing and contemplating great lyrics. Talented artist, feel-good music

Summary: Weak
Comment: I don't know what happened between the recording of Maybe I'm amazed and this album, I thought Jem was really coming into her own but to put it simply she lost her mojo. Down to Earth is a shell, hardly a glimpse of what this talented artist is capable of. I listened to the entire album and didn't hear a single song with any sort of feeling or soul. I'm sad.
