Editorial Reviews:

On her 20th anniversary as a recording artist, Tracy Chapman has written one of the most powerful and moving albums of her career. Tracy worked with producer Larry Klein, who has produced albums by Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, and Madeleine Peyroux.

Summary: Float on Air
Comment: Tracy Chapman's new CD stands out because of her depth as songwriter, powerful vocal performance & unique sound. "Save Us All" is one of my favorite tracks on the CD with its slap-happy rhythm & joyful expression of tolerance, "I've heard that your God's older, Buddha, Allah, Krishna, manifest with many faces, worshipped the world over in foreign places; I assume your God must love you." Chapman revisits the theme about the need for redemption on the hauntingly lovely title track, "To our Father, what good may come to let the children walk alone, to fear to fail & need no savior to be at peace in our bright future?" "For a Dream" also has a spiritually soothing quality. "Thinking of You" glides on Dean Parks' pixie-like guitar, "You floated on the air, far away at light speed; I guess some objects do defy the laws that we conceive." "Something to See" envisions a day when war is a history on a lovely track. Chapman examines many religious beliefs with a joyful, tender spirit. From track to track, "Our Bright Future" is a consistently excellent, a pleasure. Bravo!

Summary: Good, easy listening
Comment: Tracy Chapman is a real artist. Her work is always solid and enjoyable. I still like her first the best, but if you liked that one, you'll enjoy this one as well.

Summary: Tracy Chapman/Our Bright Future
Comment: I have been a fan since her 1st release. I really enjoy the CD, it's mellow and classic Tracy. You go girl!

Summary: Still sounds as good as ever
Comment: Chapman's back with some folky themes. "So our bright future is in our past," is the full lyric. In her 40's she's not quite as much of a fiery singer as she once was, but her voice is lovely as ever.

Of course, there's more. Here are a few samples:

"Sing for you" is a dedication to her fans.

"Did it All" is a confessional of her life.

"For a Dream" talks about the reality versus the dreams of our lives.

"Save us All" has a gospel feel. Tracy's talking about her God. Seems the two of us feel the same.

The CD's listed as 'pop.' I'd honestly consider it to be 'folk'. It's a good addition to your Chapman CDs. May not be the best introduction to her work. This is a much softer Tracy than her initial offerings.

Rebecca Kyle, December 2008
