'The Dark Knight: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack' returns with the ASCAP-winning composers from Batman Begins- Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard for a powerful orchestral score. The Special Edition features the complete score on two CD's plus four bonus remix tracks; it also contains an 8x8x40 page hardbound book.

Customer Rating: Summary: A more complete score, in a fancier package. Comment: The first release of The Dark Knight score was by all means pretty satisfying. It had a lot of really good cues from the movie, and other material was worked into some wonderful suites (Why So Serious?, Harvey Two-Face, A Dark Knight). I'd say that disc represented the movie very well.
Now there's this second release, which is clearly for the completionist or collector. It has a second disc with fifty minutes of unreleased (i.e. withheld by Warner Brothers. :p ) score material. It's all good stuff. I particularly loved "Buyer Beware" (The Scarecrow sequence), "You're Gonna Love Me" (Batman vs. Joker at the penthouse), "We Are Tonight's Entertainment" (Batman inflicts a new scar on the Joker), and "A Watchful Guardian (The finale and credits). If you're the kind of person who heard a specific cue from the movie and went nuts because they couldn't find it on the original album release, I'm certain this new disc will bring closure to your mad quest.
There are also four "remixes" to pad out the end of disc two, if you care about that sort of thing. I don't. It's typical techno rubbish that club-goers like to dance to when they're juiced up. I have to admit that some parts of these tracks border on catchy, and at times they seem on the verge of forming an epiphany about the material, but that's just before they kick into full "techno douche" mode. So, if you're like me, you'll probably want to end the CD on a good note and click "stop" before these four tracks assault your ears.
Aside from disc two, you also get the original score release (disc one) and $40 to $50 worth of fancy packaging. Both CDs are stored in a thick booklet. Unfortunately, this is essentially a deluxe version of the little inserts you'd find in the initial album release, right down to the inclusion of that same essay from Christopher Nolan. There's no behind-the-scenes material or thoughts from either Zimmer or Howard. In summary, it's a fancy picture book that you store the two discs in.
That all might sound like a letdown, but the deluxe packaging really is nice. The stills inside visually summarize the movie's story, and the whole thing looks great on a shelf or collector's stand. The only real criticism I have is for the spindles that hold the CDs. They're terrible. I don't trust them. They're the main reason this release gets four stars instead of five.
Customer Rating: Summary: BRILLIANT Comment: This is a great edition to add to your collection whether you're a Batman collector or you're a sound score purist. The second disc includes the tracks that were in the movies so you can relive those moments from the Box Office smash. The remixes from Paul Van Dyk, The Crystal Method and other well know artists are a big plus. This is truly collector material.
Customer Rating: Summary: You gotta be kidding me . .. Comment: This is a 2 disc set and Disc 1 is EXACTLY the same as the "regular" Dark Knight score which as of this writing costs $14 new. So for a cost of $42 you get one disc you probably already own and a second disc with 14 tracks thrown together. And four of those 14 are remixes. Yawn.
Why don't they simply put all the music from the movie in the same order it plays in the movie and put that on two discs? That would be of value. But paying so much for so little doesn't make sense. Unless you are a superfan, buy the regular soundtrack (which is still not in chronological order. UGH!)
Customer Rating: Summary: Clarification about the packaging Comment: I won't review the music content as others did an excellent job covering the topic. I just wanted to clarify how the packaging works. The gray slip cover holds the hard cover book which holds the two CD's. CD 1 is held on the inner front cover of the book; CD 2 on the inner back cover.
It is atrocious how the cd's are held in place. There is a rubber disc where a CD clasp should be. Once removed, the CD's are very difficult to put back in place.
The slip cover is impressive (quite sturdy and handsome) as is the book. The images are great to look at while listening to the soundtrack.
Besides the rubber CD holders, all is well.
Customer Rating: Summary: Bizarre. Comment: This is great music, but it only adds a half disc of new material since the last release for at least (depending on what Amazon's current price is) $30 extra, which leaves me feeling screwed for buying the first disc, which is now assimilated into this set as the first of the two discs.
As said, the music is excellent. It is experimental and jarring, as any music telling the story of the Joker ought to be, but everything about this collection screams an overpriced and rushed attempt to cash in on the success of the film.
The picture book, as well as the remixes, are useless and the tracks aren't in order. (Can someone please post the chronological order online?) In addition, many people have already pointed out that this is not the complete score that was recorded for the film so there are still extra pieces of it as yet unreleased.
A $60, incomplete, out of order score? Why?
Three stars for a top-notch recording. And minus two for the mistakes made in packaging, arranging and pricing this set.
